  • EduTest does not publish question counts; these come from official EduTest booklets and the format has not changed in many years. EduTest itself says tests have between 40 and 60 questions.
  • Writing time depends on the test: scholarship tests allow 15 minutes, selective entry tests 30 minutes plus 5 minutes planning.
  • Maths stays within the Year 7–8 (Stage 4) syllabus. EduTest says it is quite normal for students to get only half the questions right, and there is no penalty for a wrong answer.

EduTest vs ACER: which test is it?

EduTest and ACER are different test providers. In Victoria, the four government selective entry high schools use an ACER exam for Year 9 entry, sat in Year 8, and an EduTest exam only for the few places in Years 10 and 11. In NSW, several selective high schools fill places in Years 8 to 11 with EduTest. In both states, many independent schools use EduTest (or ACER) for scholarships. The EduTest sections are the same in NSW and Victoria. Check which test your school uses before you start.

EduTest sections are short and fast: about 30 seconds a question. Questions are terse, most have five options, and many Numerical Reasoning and Maths items include “None of these” as an option. That speed is a big part of the difficulty, so timed practice matters.

Our EduTest papers are written for students in Year 8 sitting for Year 9 entry. They are not pitched at Year 5 or 6 scholarship candidates, whose tests are at a younger level.

Questions about EduTest

What is EduTest?

EduTest is an Australian testing company. Schools use its tests for scholarships and for entry. It tests verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, reading comprehension, mathematics and written expression.

Is EduTest the same as the ACER selective entry test?

No. They are different providers with different question styles. The Victorian selective entry exam is run by ACER, and the NSW Year 7 selective test is written by Cambridge. EduTest is used by some NSW selective schools for Year 8 to 11 entry, by the Victorian selective entry high schools for Years 10 and 11 only, and by many independent schools in both states for scholarships.

Is EduTest the same in NSW and Victoria?

Yes. EduTest uses the same five sections in both states: Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics and Written Expression. What differs is who uses it. In NSW, several selective schools use it for Year 8 to 11 entry. In Victoria, independent schools use it for scholarships and the selective entry high schools use it for Years 10 and 11; Year 9 entry to those four schools is the ACER exam. Our papers are at Year 8 level, so they suit a Year 9 entry or Year 9 scholarship test in either state.

When is the EduTest?

Each school sets its own date, so check the school's website. Some NSW selective schools have tested for Year 9 entry in August. Independent schools in NSW and Victoria set their own scholarship test dates.

How hard is EduTest?

It is designed to separate students at the top end. EduTest says it is quite normal to get only half the questions right and that not every student finishes. Getting used to the pace is as important as the content.

Are your papers right for a Year 5 or 6 scholarship test?

No. Our EduTest papers are written at Year 8 level, for Year 9 entry. Younger scholarship candidates sit a test pitched at their own year level.

Is there negative marking?

No. A wrong answer costs nothing, so students should answer every question, even if they have to guess.

Do you mark the writing section?

No. Our papers cover the four multiple-choice sections.

What does it cost?

One free paper per subject, with no card needed. Full access is $149 for all four subjects or $59 for one subject, a one-time payment for 12 months that does not renew, with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
