Next exam: expected June 2027. This is our estimate from past years; the official date has not been announced.

  • Format from ACER (selectiveentry.acer.org/vic). ACER does not publish question counts for each part.
  • Our papers stay within the Year 8 curriculum, the limit ACER sets for the exam. Harder papers add reasoning steps, not later-year topics.
  • Full-length mocks in the current format are included in the Complete Bundle. ACER does not publish question counts, so the 70 and 75 questions in our mocks are our best estimate.

Full-length mocks in the current ACER format

Once the skills are in place, sit the whole test in one go. Our full-length mocks follow the combined parts of the current exam: Mathematics & Quantitative Reasoning is 70 questions in 60 minutes, and Reading & Verbal Reasoning is 75 questions in 55 minutes. Each is marked instantly, with an explanation for every question.

ACER does not publish how many questions each part has, so our question counts are our best estimate. There are two mocks for each part now, with more coming. The mocks are included in the Complete Bundle; they are not part of the single-subject plans.

Questions about VIC Selective Entry

What is on the VIC selective entry exam?

ACER runs it in three parts: Mathematics & Quantitative Reasoning (60 minutes), Reading & Verbal Reasoning (55 minutes) and Writing (40 minutes). The questions are multiple choice apart from writing, and the knowledge needed does not go beyond the Year 8 curriculum.

When is the 2027 VIC selective entry exam?

It has not been announced yet. The exam is usually held on a Saturday in June, so we expect June 2027. Check the Department of Education's selective entry page for the official date and application deadline.

Which year level sits the exam?

Students sit it in Year 8, for entry to Year 9 at one of the selective entry high schools.

Your papers are separate subjects. Is that still useful for the 3-part exam?

Yes. The combined parts test the same skills as before: maths, numerical reasoning, reading and verbal reasoning. Our subject papers let a student work on one skill at a time. For the longer sittings, the Complete Bundle includes full-length mocks in the current format: Mathematics & Quantitative Reasoning (70 questions, 60 minutes) and Reading & Verbal Reasoning (75 questions, 55 minutes).

Are the practice tests harder than the real exam?

Standard papers are close to the real exam, Challenge papers are harder, and Advanced papers are harder still. The extra difficulty comes from more reasoning steps, not from topics beyond Year 8.

How many practice tests should a student do?

Steady practice matters more than volume. One or two timed papers a week, plus time to go through the explanations for the questions that were missed, suits most students. Many families start 6 to 12 months before the exam.

Do you mark the writing section?

No. Our papers cover the multiple-choice parts only. For writing, practise both a persuasive and a creative piece under a 40-minute limit.

What does it cost?

One free paper per subject, with no card needed. Full access is $149 for all four subjects plus the full-length mocks, or $59 for one subject, a one-time payment for 12 months that does not renew, with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
