Questions parents ask

Which test is my child sitting?

It depends on their school year now. Year 4 in NSW: the OC Placement Test, for a Year 5 opportunity class. Year 6 in NSW: the Selective High School Placement Test, for Year 7. Year 8 in Victoria: the VIC Selective Entry test (run by ACER), for Year 9. Year 8, for Year 9 entry at a NSW selective school or a Year 9 scholarship at an independent school in NSW or Victoria: usually EduTest. We have practice papers for all four.

When should we start preparing?

Many families start 6 to 12 months before the test. That leaves room for short, regular sessions instead of a rush in the final weeks. The NSW Selective and OC tests are usually held in May, the VIC test in June, and EduTest dates are set by each school.

How many practice tests should my child do?

Steady practice matters more than volume. One or two timed papers a week, plus time to go through the explanations for the questions they missed, is a good rhythm for most students. Going over the mistakes is where most of the learning happens.

Does my child need a tutor?

Not necessarily. The tests reward reasoning under time pressure, which is built by practising under exam conditions and understanding each mistake. Many families prepare at home with timed papers and explanations; others use EduSpark alongside a tutor or coaching college.

Are these harder than the real test? Why?

Our Standard papers are pitched at or a little above the real test, and the Challenge and Advanced papers go further (OC papers come in Standard and Challenge). The extra difficulty comes from more reasoning steps, never from topics the test does not cover, so the real test feels manageable on the day.

How is each paper marked?

Papers are marked the moment they are submitted. You see the score, how it compares with other students who sat the same paper, a breakdown by topic, and a step-by-step explanation for every question. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so it is worth answering every question.
