Selective Exam Prep for First-Time Families (2027 Guide)

Selective exam prep for first-time families should start with one question: which exam will your child actually sit? VIC selective entry (ACER, Year 8 for Year 9), NSW Year 7 selective, NSW Opportunity Class and EduTest are different tests. Pick the pathway, learn its calendar, then practise under time in that format.

• Applications: NSW selective applications for 2027 entry opened in November 2025 (Year 5) and closed in February 2026; check the NSW Department of Education site for OC and next year’s dates. VIC ACER applications ran from March to April 2026 for the June exam.
• Tests: NSW selective and OC — around May 2027; VIC selective — around June 2027. Exact 2027 dates aren’t announced yet, so check the official sites.
• Results / offers: in 2026, VIC offers came on 3 August, NSW selective outcomes on 19 August and OC outcomes on 9 September — see how long before results come out and how to check results.

Step 3 — A first-year prep rhythm

Many families plan 6–12 months of steady work for selective pathways, and a shorter run with shorter sessions for OC. There is no official recommended number of hours. Details: how long should you study.

1. Baseline with official samples, then one timed mock.
2. Build weak sections with short, frequent sessions (not weekend marathons).
3. Simulate full timed conditions in the final 8–12 weeks; review every mistake the same day.
4. Protect wellbeing — sleep and a non-selective backup plan beat last-minute panic.

• Free official samples first (ACER / NSW DoE).
• Then timed practice with explanations matched to your pathway.
