Is the OC Test the Same as the Selective Test?

Is the OC test the same as the selective test? No. In NSW they are related placement pathways run by the Department of Education, but they target different year levels, have different structures, and open different school programs. Mixing practice papers from one into the other wastes prep time.

Timing detail: NSW selective & OC test length.

What is the same?

  • Both are NSW public gifted/placement pathways.
  • Both use computer-based testing at allocated centres.
  • Both include Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Thinking Skills.
  • Calculators are not allowed on either test day.
  • Applications and outcomes go through the NSW selective/OC application dashboard.

What is different (and easy to mix up)?

  • Writing: selective has a typed writing task; OC does not.
  • Age and stamina: OC candidates are younger — keep sessions shorter (OC prep guide).
  • Destination: OC is still primary school; selective is high school.
  • Preferences: OC allows up to two school preferences; selective allows up to three (confirm current rules on the DoE site).

What about Victorian selective?

Victoria’s ACER selective entry exam for Year 9 is a different system again — not OC and not the NSW Year 7 test. If you are aiming for Melbourne High / Mac.Rob / Nossal / Suzanne Cory, use the Melbourne selective guide and VIC format guide.
