Can Homeschooled Students Sit the NSW Selective Test?

Can homeschooled students sit the NSW selective test? Yes. The NSW Department of Education says parents can apply if their child attends a NSW public school, a non-government school, home study, an interstate school or an overseas school. Home-schooled children apply through the same online process and sit the same Selective High School Placement Test as everyone else.

What home-schooled families still need to meet

• School year: applications open late in Year 5 and close early in Year 6, and the test is sat in Year 6 for Year 7 entry. The next test is expected around May 2027; check the official site for exact dates.
• Residency: students and their families must be living in NSW by the beginning of the school year of entry. Visa holders may face extra enrolment conditions.
• Test location: from 2026 the placement test is held only in NSW. Students who are interstate or overseas must return to NSW to sit it, or they will not be considered.
• Test centre: most students are allocated a centre based on their primary school. If you home-school, check how your centre will be allocated when you apply, and contact the Selective Education team if it is unclear.

How to prepare without a school cohort

• Use the official NSW practice tests so the computer-based format is familiar before test day.
• Schedule timed sections at home at the time of day the test will run.

Victoria works the same way
