NSW OC Practice After the Official Practice Tests

Finished the official NSW Opportunity Class practice tests? That was the right first step. The next step is more timed papers in the same format, reviewed properly. Online OC-style papers with explanations give you the most practice for the time spent. Books and a tutor can help with particular gaps. “Free OC PDF” sites and anyone offering to predict an offer are rarely worth your time.

What the official practice tests give you

The Department publishes three OC practice tests. Each covers Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills, with PDFs of the questions, answers and explained answers, plus an online version that works like the real test software (NSW DoE: OC practice tests). They are the best guide to question style and screen layout. What they cannot give you is volume: three papers per subject goes quickly. The Department also says coaching or tutoring is not necessary, which is worth keeping in mind when choosing what comes next.

Options after the official tests

Next stepBest forWatch-outs
Redo one official test under strict timeChecking pace in a format you already knowA remembered answer is not a new skill
Timed online OC papers (such as EduSpark)Volume, instant marking, an explanation for every answerPractice, not the real test; make sure it is OC level, not Year 7 selective
Books and printable packsShort drills between timed papersOften untimed; some still follow the old format
Small-group tutoringCoaching on a stubborn topicExpensive as the only source of timed practice (tutoring costs compared)
“Free OC PDF” sitesRarely worth itWrong level, unclear copyright, no explanations

Keep OC and Year 7 selective papers apart

The two tests share question styles but not level: the selective test is sat two years later and adds Writing (OC test vs selective test). For a Year 4 child, stick to OC papers.

A simple weekly loop

  1. One timed paper, rotating Reading, Maths and Thinking Skills.
  2. Go through every miss the same day and note its type.
  3. Two short untimed drills on the weakest type.
  4. Note the score, but watch the trend rather than any one result. No practice score can predict an offer.

The OC sample questions need no signup, and Paper 1 in each EduSpark OC subject is free with an account. For a fuller plan, see how to prepare for the OC test.
