Opportunity Class Past Papers — Samples vs Practice Tests

The NSW Department of Education does not publish a bank of Opportunity Class past papers. What it does publish is a set of free official practice tests for the current computer-based format. Searches for “OC past papers” usually mix three different things: official NSW Department of Education sample questions, old paper-format materials from before the computer-based test, and modern timed practice papers written to match today's OC format.

Past papers vs practice tests — why the distinction matters

• Past papers usually means real or near-real exams from previous sittings. For OC, the Department does not release a large public archive of full past papers the way some subjects do for HSC-style exams.
• Practice tests / practice papers are purpose-built mocks. They should mirror section timings, question styles, and (since 2025) the computer-based experience — even if they are not literal reprints of last year's exam.

What the NSW Department of Education actually provides

Start with the official Opportunity Classes page. The DoE publishes sample questions and practice material aligned with the current computer-based Placement Test (Mathematical Reasoning, Thinking Skills, and Reading), including practice tests with explained answers on the OC practice tests page. These are the best check of the format — and they are free.

What they are not: a multi-year bank of downloadable past papers with full mark schemes. Volume is intentionally limited. Use DoE samples for familiarisation, then add timed practice for stamina and weak-topic work.

Why old paper PDFs can mislead

Circulating “OC past papers” PDFs often come from before 2025, when the test was still on paper, or from tutoring centres and mixed gifted-test banks. Common problems:

• Wrong medium (paper booklet vs on-screen navigation)
• Outdated difficulty or question mix
• Missing or incorrect answers
• No explanations a 9-year-old can learn from
• No enforced timing or progress tracking

If you use an older PDF, treat it as light skill practice — not as a score predictor for the live computer-based OC test.
