What numerical reasoning is testing
Numerical / quantitative reasoning checks pattern recognition, sequences, data interpretation and logical number relationships, without a calculator. Where it sits differs by exam:
- VIC selective entry (ACER): since the June 2026 exam, quantitative reasoning is no longer a separately timed test. It shares one 60-minute part with Mathematics (“Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning”). ACER does not publish question counts.
- EduTest: Numerical Reasoning is its own 30-minute section, heavy on number series, grids and multi-step word problems.

NSW Year 7 selective names its number paper Mathematical Reasoning (not “numerical reasoning”) — map practice to the exam you will sit.
