Is Opportunity Class the same as gifted and talented? Closely related, but not identical labels. In NSW, Opportunity Classes (OC) are a specific Department of Education placement pathway for Years 5–6 at selected primary schools. “Gifted and talented” is a broader education term that can mean school-based enrichment, extension groups, or other programs that are not the statewide OC placement test.

What Opportunity Class is

What “gifted and talented” often means at school

• In-class differentiation or extension without changing schools
• Local “G&T” / high-potential groups decided by the school
• Subject acceleration or enrichment clubs
• High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) approaches inside a local school — policy language that is wider than OC alone

A child can be identified as high-potential or gifted by their school and not hold an OC place. Conversely, OC is one formal pathway for high-ability primary students — it is not the only definition of giftedness.

OC vs selective high school (common mix-up)
