Can you appeal a selective school placement result? Sometimes — but only on narrow, documented grounds, and the rules differ by state. Disappointment, coaching-college scores, or “my child deserved a re-mark” are not valid reasons in NSW. Victoria does not run a parent appeals process to overturn ACER ranking-based offers. NSW Selective (Year 7) and Opportunity Class (Year 5)

The NSW Department of Education allows outcome appeals in a limited set of circumstances. Appeals are submitted in the same online application dashboard used to apply. The window is short — typically about five business days after outcomes are released (for the 2027-entry cycle, selective appeals closed 26 August 2026 11:59 pm and OC appeals 16 September 2026 11:59 pm on the published key dates). Late appeals are not accepted.

What will not work

• Asking for any test questions to be re-marked (multiple choice is computer-marked with reliability checks; writing is already double-marked).
• Getting individual percentage scores or statewide ranks (not released, even on appeal).
• Invalid grounds listed by the Department: disappointment; young age; lack of prep; coaching / NAPLAN / IQ / school-report arguments; travel convenience; wanting to sit with friends or siblings.
• Issues that should have been raised earlier as illness/misadventure around test day.

What can be valid

Valid appeals generally need strong documentary evidence (for example medical evidence or unforeseen circumstances relevant to how the outcome was determined). Upload evidence with the form (maximum of three documents on the Department process). Once submitted, appeals cannot be edited. Only appeals with sufficient evidence are referred to an appeals panel (selective/OC principals plus a Director, Educational Leadership). Panel decisions are final.

Victoria (ACER selective entry — Year 9)

ACER publishes performance information and runs multi-round offers for Melbourne High, Mac.Rob, Nossal, and Suzanne Cory. Parents monitor the application portal and email. There is no public parent appeal pathway to re-rank exam results or force a place based on disagreement with the score. If you miss Round 1, you remain in the pool for later rounds while places open; formal rounds for 2027 entry ran through August 2026 on the published ACER calendar, with possible late offers into Term 4.

A separate principal’s discretion pathway exists for a small number of invited candidates — that is not an appeal of the exam rank, and principal decisions are final. Confirm process pages on ACER results and selection and vic.gov.au selective entry.

Illness / misadventure vs outcome appeal (NSW)

NSW distinguishes test-day illness/misadventure requests (deadlines soon after the sitting / make-up test) from later outcome appeals. Do not wait until results day to raise a documented test-day issue that had its own earlier window.

• Accept, decline, or monitor reserve lists on the official timeline.
• Confirm enrolment / local comprehensive backup plans early.
