Can Year 5 students sit the OC test? No. The NSW Opportunity Class Placement Test is sat in Year 4, for a two-year OC placement in Years 5 and 6. The Department of Education says students must be in Year 4 when they sit the test, and parents cannot apply for a Year 6 place on its own (NSW DoE: opportunity classes).
Who sits OC, and when
- Apply: end of Year 3 or start of Year 4
- Sit the test: Year 4, in May (a make-up test later in May is for approved illness or misadventure)
- Start OC: Year 5, and continue in Year 6

What if my child is already in Year 5?
The OC window has passed. The next government pathway is the NSW Selective High School Placement Test, sat in Year 6 for Year 7 entry. It uses the same question styles as OC (Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, Thinking Skills), pitched older, and adds a Writing test. Year 5 is a good time to build reading stamina and number confidence without exam pressure.
Many schools also run their own enrichment or high-potential programs. These are not the same as OC (OC vs gifted and talented).
Year 3 families asking early
Year 3 is for groundwork: lots of reading and solid number sense. Focused OC preparation usually starts in Year 4 with short, regular sessions (how to prepare for the OC test).
