Is the NSW Selective Schools Test Hard?

Is the NSW selective schools test hard? It is competitive more than it is “trick question hard.” Thousands of Year 6 students sit the Selective High School Placement Test each cycle for limited Year 7 places. Difficulty is relative to the field, the school cut-offs you are aiming for, and how familiar your child is with timed computer-based papers.

What makes it feel hard

• Time pressure. Mathematical Reasoning (35 in 40 minutes) and Thinking Skills (40 in 40 minutes) punish slow methods.
• Unfamiliar item types. Thinking Skills and multi-part Reading items are not everyday classroom worksheets.
• Full-day stamina. Four sections including a typed Writing task — see test length.
• Competition for top preferences. James Ruse, North Sydney Boys/Girls, and other high-demand schools have higher effective bars than less subscribed options.

What “hard” does not mean

• It is not a Year 10 content exam. Reasoning and application matter more than racing ahead years in curriculum.
• There is no fixed statewide “pass mark.” Placement depends on ranked performance, preferences, and available places.
• A tough mock score early in prep is normal — format familiarity moves scores as much as raw ability in the first months.

How hard vs other pathways
