Is the NSW Selective Schools Test Hard?

Is the NSW selective schools test hard? It is competitive more than it is “trick question hard.” Thousands of Year 6 students sit the Selective High School Placement Test each year for a limited number of Year 7 places. Difficulty is relative to the field, the school cut-offs you are aiming for, and how familiar your child is with timed computer-based papers.

What makes it feel hard

• Time pressure. Mathematical Reasoning (35 in 40 minutes) and Thinking Skills (40 in 40 minutes) punish slow methods.
• Unfamiliar item types. Thinking Skills and multi-part Reading items are not everyday classroom worksheets.
• Full-day stamina. Four sections including a typed Writing task — see test length.
• Competition for top preferences. James Ruse, North Sydney Boys, North Sydney Girls and other high-demand schools have higher effective bars than less subscribed options.

What “hard” does not mean

• It is not an advanced-content exam. The maths stays within what students have already learnt in primary school; the difficulty comes from reasoning and time pressure, so racing ahead in the curriculum does not help much.
• There is no fixed statewide “pass mark.” Placement depends on ranked performance, preferences, and available places.
• A low mock score early in preparation is normal — familiarity with the format often lifts scores in the first months.

How hard vs other pathways

Compared with NSW OC, selective adds Writing and a longer day. Compared with VIC ACER Year 9 selective, the systems differ in year level, provider, and paper mix — not the same every state. EduTest scholarship sittings are another family of papers entirely.

How to make it manageable

1. Learn the official question counts and timings (question counts).
2. Practise on screen; NSW is computer-based (CBT guide).
